Director’s Statement
Fiona Yang is a DC-based filmmaker who hails from Nanjing, Mainland China. Her past lives as a performance artist and research-based playwright compel her to take a hybridized form to document the imagery of the past that haunts the present. Born and raised in the censorship era of technology, Fiona’s work strives to deconstruct the repercussions of collective fear by shedding light on unrecorded narratives, in order to question and to intervene in the state media manifestos of truth taken for granted. This area of research allows her to experiment on reinterpreting found footage, performance arts, and oral histories in the form of essayistic collage. Fiona’s projection art-based solo show Free China: A Bedtime Thing premiered at Providence Fringe Festival 2017. She received a BA in Theatre & Performance Studies from Brown University, and is currently an MFA candidate in Documentary Media at Northwestern University.
