About Me
Ziyi Yang is a DC-based filmmaker who hails from mainland China. Her past experience as a performance artist led her to make documentaries that take a visceral, hybrid form to tackle the theme of collective trauma. By using oral histories to access complex geo-political research, her work deals with the image of whitewashing and oppression in post millennial China.
Born and raised in an era where media censorship has long subjected people to defaulted acquiescence, Fiona hopes to problematize the issue of self-censorship in both digital and physical realities, through collage-based image-making and giving voice to the stigmatized populations of China.
Ziyi’s projection art-based solo show Free China: A Bedtime Thing premiered at Providence Fringe Festival 2017. She received a BA in Theatre & Performance Studies from Brown University, and is currently an MFA candidate in Documentary Media at Northwestern University.
